Case Study : Wavelet Technology and The Casino project

The Great Aljarafe Casino is located in the city of Seville and occupies an area of almost 7,000 square metres, together with an extensive parking area. Officially opened in March 2006 the casino offers a range of leisure activities including bars, a nightclub and five restaurants. The casino has 25 gaming tables where popular games such as black jack, poker and roulette are presented and an area with one hundred recreational machines.

The Security Requirement

The Casino invited potential suppliers to submit a proposal for the installation of a network of cameras and to record the video (and audio) continuously at 25 images per second, for a minimum period of 10 days. The system was required to operate over a local area network, and permit upwards of eleven individual users to simultaneously access and view any live or archived data.

Casinos in Spain are heavily regulated and operate under a legal requirement to maintain a comprehensive recording and management system during the casino’s “opening hours”.
This legislation requires that all activity in the public areas and at the games tables is continuously recorded.

The Solution

Despite the technical expertise available in Spain, Andromica Video Systems’ proposal, based on the deployment of Wavestore recorders, was selected because of their combined specialist knowledge of the gaming and leisure industry.

In addition to which, the combined ability of Wavestore to record at high frame rates, to record and display high image quality and the ability to deliver synchronised audio were decisive factors in gaining the contract.

A network of 10 Wavestore digital video recorders was subsequently installed to record video data from 125 analogue cameras simultaneously at 25 images per second, at 4 CIF resolution. All activity the gaming tables are recorded at 25 pictures per second to provide detailed analysis of motion in the scene.

The total storage capacity installed was 12TB of storage, provided in 10 rack mounted recorders which are located in a secure area and operated fully unattended. This option was preferred over that of a distributed design (where individual recorders are located near clusters of cameras)

The very fast “image find” capability that is a hallmark of the Wavestore design is not compromised by this approach even if all the remote users are simultaneously utilising any of the pentaplex functionality, (back-up, record, playback, network or view live).

There are various control stations located around the casino, including one in each of three pit areas, one in each of the managers' offices, and one in the security control room. Pit managers are associated with specific gaming tables, and are on hand to resolve a local dispute with the players, such as whose chip was placed on a specific number, or whether a card was dealt inadvertently by a croupier.

The ability within Wavestore to instantly access specific video and synchronised audio data enables such disputes to be resolved decisively.
The Security personnel and pit managers are frequently required to locate archived images instantly from the extensive data storage arrays. In particular they rely upon the Wavestore for the ability to select and export still images of known gambling cheats or banned players who are observed in the casino.

An important element of the Wavestore solution was the company’s ability to provide a remote and secure diagnostic and maintenance capability from their UK operations.

Monitoring of the camera images is provided in two ways using PC terminals; either the standard Wavestore remote client software or Wavestore EVIS; a powerful user-configurable security management suite that provides a remote monitoring and control capability, combined with interactive maps with which untrained staff can operate the monitoring station. EVIS also provide a series of optional functions such as linking cameras to access control and alarm circuits to retain a video record of an adverse event.
The casino specification required that the EVIS software be installed with a map of the casino floor in a grid format, such that when an area was selected, the associated PTZ camera would traverse to that area and display the live images. The operator is then able to take control and zoom in onto the specific activity. The system also provides the user with the option to select a fixed or PTZ camera to monitor and record such selections.

The fundamental technology that underpins the Wavestore product is highly scalable and networkable, enabling many casinos to be networked and/or monitored remotely.

On the opening day of the casino there were several suspicious characters present within the casino, and the staff found it very easy to track these characters around the casino floor using the map application.

The Installer
Andromica Video Systems was one of a number of installers to bid for the prestigious programme and was awarded the contract owing to their track record of offering premium good value solutions, and their skill in preparing a well structured solution.
The name Andromica has been recognised within the gaming and leisure industry since 1976 when the first cameras were installed at the London Playboy Club. Since then, the name has become synonymous with excellent design and installation of quality CCTV and access control equipment.

Long Range IR Camera provides 24/7 Surveillance

Wavelet Technology (WTL) announces the Discoverii infrared camera for physical security and perimeter surveillance. It is ideal for secure premises, airports, ports, pipelines and transportation environments; providing high quality images at all times under any light conditions.

Well known for its Wavestore range of high performance digital video recorders, WTL determined that whilst there are many high performance cameras available, there are no cost effective night vision systems available for object identification for distances from 150 metres to 2000 metres.

Discoverii addresses this problem by providing superb real-time colour images during daylight, and grey-scale natural contrast, real-time zoom video images in total darkness. Furthermore the camera delivers this performance over an operating range up to 1500 metres under total darkness and adverse weather conditions. The natural contrast image is far superior to passive illumination technologies, and is zoom-able throughout its range in seconds.

The camera is ideal for covert applications since it utilises a laser light that operates below the visible spectrum to illuminate the target area. The low level infrared laser is synchronised to an infrared sensitive camera, and combined with proprietary filtering and software algorithms, that enables the operator to view live images, (similar to that seen with the beam of a torch-light), whilst the subject has no idea that they are being monitored.

A further problem experienced with active infrared systems is the narrow field of view that makes navigation and orientation difficult. A complementary software programme called OMNII automatically records thousands of pictures and stitches these together to forma comprehensive panoramic image in 5/10 minutes. This provides the user with a navigable (PTZ) real-time night image integrated in a static full perspective view, and the capability to follow a target along a road, railway, pipeline, shipping lane or building structure.

Discoverii offers excellent performance with small optical apertures and high magnification that makes it ideal for target recognition, identification and intelligence gathering. Unlike active IR technology based on lamps and bulbs, its laser illuminator has a significantly longer life and is relatively maintenance free.

Weighing just 15 pounds and being less that fifteen inches wide and fifteen inches long, Discoverii is easy and affordable to deploy, and can be controlled in a similar manner to standard PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras.

The combination of Discoverii and Omnii addresses the two fundamental shortcomings of current night vision security systems that are operating range and loss of context and orientation. It is a cost effective and easily deployable solution that is easily integrated with the Wavestore digital video recording system.

Wavestore Digital Readers for London Underground
The terrorist attacks on the London Underground recently has tested the capabilities of CCTV systems that are commonplace in the underground stations but which are in limited use on the trains.

Following the attacks on July 7th Alstom Transport, the management company responsible for the supply and maintenance of trains on the Northern Line, instructed Falcon Protec to supply digital readers to analyse the digital video recordings acquired from the Falcon Protec on train digital recorders.

Wavelet Technology (WTL) had completed a feasibility study for CCTV review workstations in 2004, and the now urgent requirement demanded the completion of the system development and delivery of a fully functional product immediately.

WTL immediately established a fast track development programme assigning, software and hardware teams to perform the multiple tasks required for this crucial work.

The data and storage system of the recorder was successfully recognised to allow the copying of several recorders onto a single large back-up hard drive. Although each contains 72 hours of CCTV recording, the entire video files were copied in just 18 minutes. The original recorders were then to be installed back onto the trains for continued service.

Further development by WTL allowed the recordings to be analysed by the Wavestore Review software that can then be used to review the back-up disk’s archive of up to 120 cameras, from several days of recordings, instantly.

The repeated attacks in London on the 21st prompted the immediate deployment of WTL’s prototype review workstation and the Police were able to quickly identify a suspect from the Oval station train recordings and release images that became ubiquitous in national newspapers and on television.

The Wavestore system is recognised as one of the most fully featured review products available in the CCTV industry. With the fastest access to the recordings, users can go back into archive by simple time and date entry or by dragging the unique ‘waterfall’ recordings display for each and every camera. Snapshots can be exported into JPEG, PNG, BMP format or printed out directly onto a printer. Selected video clips from multiple cameras can be further copied onto CD-R or DVD-R for playback and review on any PC.

Docklands On-Train CCTV Security System

In order to enhance passenger and staff safety and deter vandalism, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) commissioned the installation of Wavestore Diamond digital video recorders onto all its trains. A total of one hundred DVRs communicate through a wireless network, providing total & continuous recording and remote real time monitoring of the entire train network.

Each DVR records and stores the image from six cameras situated throughout each carriage, and monitors a total of sixteen alarms inputs, which includes passenger alarm buttons and key fob alarms carried by the staff.

Wavestore’s remote monitoring technology presents the security staff with an interactive map of the network enabling them to respond instantly to alarm activations and/or recorded incidents.

The capital cost is justified by reductions in insurance claims and unscheduled repair, greater rolling stock availability and reduced insurance premiums. The enhanced safety for staff and passengers cannot be valued.

Wavestore Diamond is one of a series of recorders designed and manufactured by Wavelet Technology in the UK.
