Perimeter Security Case Study for Port Security by Dr Frucht:

In order to evaluate the potential market, we will look to 2 market segments where our products exhibit a clear advantage: fixed perimeter systems ( border and infrastructure) and mobile security systems.

In the fixed perimeter systems field we are competing with the Video Motion Detectors (VMD). The VMD is based on the picture analysis. During the last 2-3 years several tests were conducted and they brought up the high sensibility of VMD to the outdoor environment.

The advantage of our sensors is that they are "active", they do not analyze shadows but asses if there is an intruder by measuring the changes in the distances between the background and the target and size of the suspected object.

Moreover, it can take into account the target movement characteristics such as speed, directions etc. Due to the high resolution of our sensors in range and angle (centimeters and milliradians) the software can discriminate the movement of vegetation.

The sensors developed by the company where designed for mobile applications. They are robust, rigid, not affected by urban environment and vegetation, easy to install (can be operational within tens of seconds) and by adding Power Supply (batteries) and Wire Less they are easy to become "virtual guardians".

Case study : Bradley International Airport
by Johnson Controls.

New airport terminal takes security and integrated facility management
to new heights

For Bradley International Airport, the completion of its 260,000-square-foot
terminal improvement project was a tremendous accomplishment. The reason
is two-fold. As one of the fastest-growing airports in the nation, Bradley is now
sized to accommodate current and future scheduled passenger service with a
modern, streamlined terminal.

Secondly, as one of the only airports to proceed
with construction plans when the events of September 11th occurred, Bradley
is now a state-of-the-art airport with high-tech security and integrated facility
management systems that are scaleable to meet future federal requirements.

Port Security
Applications in ports can be very similar to those in airports with a key difference.

Most ports today tend to handle cargo rather than passengers. The applications are therefore skewed towards managing and protecting cargo as well as ships.
The larger ports have large container storage areas where containers are stored before they are loaded on to a ship (or when they are unloaded). Though containers are very large items they too can be the target for thieves if they contain a valuable cargo. A theft detection system similar to one used in a warehouse can be very helpful here. Every time a container is moved the event is recorded. If a container disappears it is then an easy matter to identify the last persons who moved it.

Ports authorities have a responsibility to protect ships within their harbour. On the land side this security can be provided with fencing and other physical barriers. On the sea side a video based system can be used to detect small boats that might come to near one of the big ships parked there. Download PDF. Or View Iomniscient for more.

Airport Coventry - UK

As the first low-cost airport in the UK, Coventry Airport is offering flights to many distances for low cost. Since 31st March 2004, the TUI subsidiary Thomson-fly.com is utilizing the Coventry Airport located in the heart of the English midlands as the ideal centre for low-cost flights to 17 European cities. In November 2004, the Coventry Airport will also become a destination for the German low-cost airline Hapag-Lloyd Express. In only less than six months since opening for business, more than 380.000 travellers have started their vacations from Coventry Airport. Within the first 12 months, altogether 500.000 passengers are expected.

Low Cost

The secret to success? In the face of fierce competition, Coventry Airport pursues to keep the running airport costs so low that airlines can offer their flights at competitive low-cost terms. This means that the infrastructure at Coventry Airport is not as luxurious as at other major airports. However, the passengers are glad to give up some of this luxury in order to save some money.

High Security

With all cost savings, security at the Coventry Airport does not fall short. Especially with the threat of international terrorism, security at Coventry Airport has the highest priority. To meet the request for high security, Coventry Airport selected MOBOTIX IP-cameras for their video surveillance system. This system is not only praised by the Ministry of Transport, but it also serves as a model for other airports.

Case Study - Airport Security by Verint
Detroit Metro Airport

Airport Shutdowns Cost Millions
In the last two months of 2001, there were 30 airport shutdowns in the United States alone. Breaches in security resulting in shutdowns cost the airline industry millions of dollars. Over 1,000 flights were delayed, and 434 planes had to have their passengers exit for re-screening. In the past, shutdowns have typically been the result of a security breach at the checkpoint. These breaches have mainly been caused by:

• A person running through the airport without stopping at the checkpoint
• Confusion caused by a passenger who was selected for secondary screening, but moved
through the checkpoint into a sterile area
• A person entering a sterile area through an exit lane, moving in the wrong direction

Integrated Alarm Systems: Key To Success

Detroit Metro, like other airports in the US and around the world, suffered shutdowns from breaches long before the incidents of September, 2001. By integrating their surveillance system with alarm systems, Detroit Metro Airport has alleviated costly shutdowns and saved both time and money. Using Verint® Networked Video Solutions, airport security is notified immediately of any breach at a checkpoint and is
able to immediately notify other checkpoints to stop the processing of additional passengers.

Case Study - Port Security and Cargo Security by Verint
Port of Galveston
The Company
Located on the upper coast of Texas, the Port of Galveston provides easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and serves as a strategic port for trade between the United States and its international partners.

Operational Overview
The port stretches across an 850 acre campus and includes facilities handling all types of cargo, including containers, dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, roll on-roll off, refrigerated and project cargo, two cruise ship terminals handling more than 370,000 passengers per
year, and access to two national railway systems with direct connections to major US cities.

Strategic Challenge
In today’s climate, Port Director Steve Cernak and other directors of ports on coasts throughout the world are working to meet increasingly stringent security objectives.

The Solution
The Port recently implemented a Verint® Networked Video Solution to enhance security of its container facilities, passenger terminals, and perimeter.
“We researched video surveillance solutions and found that Verint offered the solution that provided all of the key elements we need,” Cernak said. “Technologically and economically, Verint offered the best solution given the vastness of the system we require. Because of the port’s size and scope, we found that the only way to connect to the system was to use wireless technology. In addition, the size and complexity of the system required an intelligent solution to manage all of the components.”

The Bottom Line
A Verint Networked Video Solution enables the Port of Galveston to enhance the security of its facilities by networking video across multiple locations using wireless and wired equipment. By applying advanced content analytics to extract actionable intelligence from live and stored video, the system helps secure facilities and perimeter from a central location.

The Port of Galveston uses a proprietary software analysis tool to determine the most effective and economical camera placement. By alerting security personnel to potential security threats as they occur, the Verint solution is designed to help the Port prevent security breaches and improve response time. In addition, the system is integrated
with the Port’s infrared illumination technology for low light visibility.

PCSC expands Access Control Perimeter Security with Fence Alert and Tamper Alert.

Complete facility control, detection and monitoring is now possible. Ensure access control beyond the building.

Fence Alert and Tamper Alert are state-of-the-art perimeter control systems designed for seamless integration with PCSC's hardware and software solutions. A highly sensitive, yet unobtrusive fiber optic sensing cable immediately detects and localizes any disturbance to the fence caused by climbing, cutting, or tampering.

The Tamper Alert system consists of rugged, low cost all-optical microphonic sensor cables, passive sensing nodes that delineate each detection zone, and a central processor unit. A single central processor unit can monitor up to 8 individual zones, and each individual zone can be up to 500 meters in length. This system is designed for chain link, welded wire, or rigid security fences.

The Fence Alert system is an all fiber optic monitoring system that multiplies the effectiveness of any new or existing chain link fence to keep out unwanted intruders. The heart of the system is a rugged, yet low cost all-optical “maintenance-free” sensor cable that can be easily attached to any installed perimeter fence. An individual sensor cable can be up to one mile in length and can pinpoint intrusion attempts to within 25 feet. This equates to up to 200 discrete detection zones per each mile of perimeter fence. Multiple cables can be joined for longer perimeters. Since it is all-optical, the cable contains no electronics and therefore is not affected by electromagnetic or radio frequency interference, rain, lightning, heat or cold. PCSC

Iomniscient and Prison Security
In any prison environment it is extremely important to ensure that security level is being maintained all the time. iOmniscient’s unique internationally patented technology Non-Motion Detection can help to monitor any suspicious objects being placed in the perimeter of the prison even under constant obscuration. Only iOmniscient’s software is capable of working under these environments.

Prison staff need to be notified every time a person crosses a particular barrier. Whenever an officer enters a cell block or if a prisoner is brought out the event needs to be recorded. Counting can be important. – it is important to know the numbers who entered a certain area and the number of those who have left it.A very important application is the detection of items that are thrown over the perimeter wall into or out of the prison. The object could be something as small as a mobile phone. The authorities, however, will normally want to be made aware of these objects and would confiscate them. So any object detection system aimed at detecting small objects that get thrown into or out of the prison needs to cope with people being present in the scene at the time.

IQ-Prisons is based on iOmniscient's IQ product series - renowned as the most Intelligent Video
Analytics system in the world. Powered by patented Non-Motion Detection (NMD) technology and an unbeatable Nuisance Alarm Minimization System (NAMS), the advanced detection capabilities affore false alarms place it well ahead of anything else available in the market. Case Study - Transport Security - Bus and Rail Security by Verint
Eurotransport BVG.

For transport operators, protecting their passengers, staff and their assets is of paramount importance, and increasingly so. Whether on buses, trains or trams, indeed on any passenger transport, combating crime and dealing with the fall-out of crime is a major concern, fraught with challenges. For Eurotransport, Robert Wint, Marketing Director of EMEA Verint Solutions interviewed Mr. Burkhard Eberwein, Head of Vehicle Management (Bus) Department at BVG, who examines the challenges and developments concerning security for public transport users in Berlin

Perhaps the greatest challenge is how to find the most viable, most cost-efficient and most effective way of dealing with the serious issues of violence and vandalism that plague network operators, reduce passenger numbers and impact significantly on the bottom line. The solutions, too, must have the support of those passengers and the wider public at large, not to mention the authorities, in order for those solutions to work.

One network operator that can genuinely claim to be at the forefront of providing a safe environment for staff and passengers alike is Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), one of the largest bus operators in the European local public transport sector. BVG’s network comprises nine underground railway lines, 22 tram lines and 201 bus routes as well as six ferries on Berlin’s waterways.

Wholly owned by the State of Berlin since 1929, when BVG was established in 1847 it
operated five bus routes with 20 horse-drawn vehicles and 120 horses. Today its vehicles carry approximately 900 million passengers – equivalent to over 2.4 million people very day – and its bus routes alone total more than 1,600km. Almost 6,600 unidirectional bus stops (total of day and night services combined) are available.

Vandalism and petty crime BVG suffers no more than any other transport
operator in Europe from incidences of petty vandalism on its buses, or other outbreaks of antisocial behaviour. Assaults on drivers or other passengers are thankfully still the exception, rather than the rule, but BVG nevertheless understands it has a public duty to try and reduce any examples of crime on its buses to nil, if at all possible.

Case Study : Railway Station Security by Mobotix

Deutsche Bahn (DB)

German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) gives high priority to keeping travelers informed. This explains why 220 million euros were invested in a single "Traveler Information System" project. The system is a technical and organizational platform that supplies consistent, reliable and up-to-date information about the current operating status to customers and employees alike. Thanks to this system, on-board personnel can, for example, use text messaging technology to communicate with operations control and to quickly inform passengers about any irregularities. Since station announcers and service staff are likewise linked to the system, passengers waiting at stations can receive the same information.

Security Solution

The announcement service is assisted by MOBOTIX technology. The cameras from the Kaiserslautern-based manufacturer are not only used to track the movements of DB'strains, but increasingly, they are also expected to perform security functions. As such, they play an important part in Deutsche Bahn's "SST program" (Service, Security and Tidiness), which also includes Magdeburg central station.

Case Study - Garage Security by Mobotix

Auto-Schöttle

We know most of our 800 car dealership customers personally. As a result, we can offer them very individualized service, which distinguishes us from our larger competitors.” For Heinrich Krawietz, co-owner and managing director of Auto-Schöttle in Stuttgart-Botnang, consistent customer care is not just another slick marketing phrase. In his dealership, word is worth just as much as a signed contract. Hard work, cost savings, trust, honesty and openness are virtues that are lived on a daily basis and never go out of style. Together with his 15 employees, the master car mechanic is continuing a tradition that was founded more than 50 years ago.

Danger Zone

Once quite common, the combination of a gas station with a car dealership is something you don’t see very often anymore. For Heinrich Krawietz, however, the gas station presents an opportunity to win customers for the dealership repair shop. Running a gas station, however, does involve certain security risks. After all, now that gas prices keep on climbing, gas theft has also been on the rise over the past few years. To try stop these so-called ‘gas-up-and-run’ customers, two small analog surveillance cameras, each with a miniature screen, had already been installed in 1993. “But these cameras did not have a recording function, which means we would have had to watch them all the time,” reported Heinrich Krawietz.

Schools and Universities have a large number of young and potentially vulnerable people that they have been charged to look after. Many of these organisations now have computer rooms and it is common for one or more of the machines there to be stolen.

An IQ 140 level object detection system could certainly be used to protect a room full of computers. The system would ignore students when they are in the room using the computer but if one of the machines is taken out of the room the system will generate an alarm. This type of system is valuable as most thefts of such equipment often occur during school hours. When the school is empty at night there is also a risk of vandals spraying graffiti or lighting fires. This too can be detected using an IQ 140 level system.

Universities and schools are places where students tend to work late and walk home down secluded paths at night there is the risk of the student being accosted and robbed or even sexually assaulted. In this environment it would be appropriate to install a system that is voice activated. Voice Recognition systems can be used to recognize key words such as, “help” or “stop”. A microphone on the camera can be used to record sound and set off an alarm if a key word is heard.

When activated the system can switch on flood lights and possibly put out an announcement on the loudspeaker advising the assailants that they had been identified. This can be a recorded message though attackers may learn that they are only being talked to by a machine and soon ignore these messages. An alternative is to have the guard (even if he is remote as he is likely to be) talk to the attacker. Download PDF. or View Iomniscient

Case study, Ave Maria University, Ave Maria, Florida

Ave Maria University, located in southwest Florida, opened its doors to students on
August 27, 2007. Ave Maria is the first new Catholic university built in the United States in more than 40 years and among the world’s most technologically advanced, thanks to the steadfast vision of its founder and design team.

By employing the industry best practice of technology contracting and Johnson Controls, Ave Maria successfully converged 23 systems from information technology (IT) to facility operations, on a single Internet protocol (IP) network.

The university is the product of, founder and chancellor, Thomas S. Monaghan’s dream
to build an institution of higher education that would be faithful to the teachings of the
Catholic Church. After more than five years of planning and construction, and four years
of operating from a temporary campus in Naples, the university made its permanent
home on a 908-acre campus in a new town named just for it - Ave Maria, Florida.
The campus has 500,000 square feet of facilities, serving nearly 500 students and 200
faculty and staff, and plenty of room to grow.
