A 10-year, $4.4 billion development program is taking Toronto Pearson International
Airport to new levels of safety, efficiency and passenger service. As Canada’s busiest
airport, Pearson handles more than 25 million passengers per year with 1,200 daily

annually.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has a mandate to operate

Airport Coventry - UK

As the first low-cost airport in the UK, Coventry Airport is offering flights to many distances for low cost. Since 31st March 2004, the TUI subsidiary Thomson-fly.com is utilizing the Coventry Airport located in the heart of the English midlands as the ideal centre for low-cost flights to 17 European cities. In November 2004, the Coventry Airport will also become a destination for the German low-cost airline Hapag-Lloyd Express. In only less than six months since opening for business, more than 380.000 travellers have started their vacations from Coventry Airport. Within the first 12 months, altogether 500.000 passengers are expected.

Low Cost

The secret to success? In the face of fierce competition, Coventry Airport pursues to keep the running airport costs so low that airlines can offer their flights at competitive low-cost terms. This means that the infrastructure at Coventry Airport is not as luxurious as at other major airports. However, the passengers are glad to give up some of this luxury in order to save some money.

High Security

With all cost savings, security at the Coventry Airport does not fall short. Especially with the threat of international terrorism, security at Coventry Airport has the highest priority. To meet the request for high security, Coventry Airport selected MOBOTIX IP-cameras for their video surveillance system. Lübeck Port

With a market share of 40 percent, Lübeck is Germany’s biggest Baltic Sea port.
Last year, 25.4 million metric tons of goods were handled here. The port’s heavy traffic, with around 150 departures to 24 partner ports a week, contributes to Lübeck’s success, along with the exceptional ability to handle roll-on/roll-off traffic. The A1 autobahn, the railway network operated by Deutsche Bahn and the Elb-Lübeck channel provide excellent connections for the delivery of the goods that come on site.

Consistent Video Surveillance

The public port facilities, operated by LHG (Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft mbH), include four zones with a total area of 120 hectares and 15 ship berths. Some 730,000 trailers and trucks and around 1,800 block trains move in and out of the facility each year. Almost 90,000 container units (TEU) are also transshipped here. To guarantee comprehensive port security and safety in such dimensions, LHG has opted for the consistent video surveillance of all the critical areas – and uses IP cameras from MOBOTIX.

Trailer Check

Security plays an absolutely crucial role in vehicle handling operations. With the trailer check system, one of the modules of the integrated port and logistics system (HIS) operated by LHG, trucks reporting in and out at the gate are scanned using advanced new systems and photographed from all sides by digital cameras as they pass through a portal, all at a speed of up to 30 km/h.

Airport Shutdowns Cost Millions
In the last two months of 2001, there were 30 airport shutdowns in the United States alone. Breaches in security resulting in shutdowns cost the airline industry millions of dollars. Over 1,000 flights were delayed, and 434 planes had to have their passengers exit for re-screening. In the past, shutdowns have typically been the result of a security breach at the checkpoint. These breaches have mainly been caused by:

• A person running through the airport without stopping at the checkpoint
• Confusion caused by a passenger who was selected for secondary screening, but moved
through the checkpoint into a sterile area
• A person entering a sterile area through an exit lane, moving in the wrong direction

The Company
Located on the upper coast of Texas, the Port of Galveston provides easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and serves as a strategic port for trade between the United States and its international partners.

Operational Overview
The port stretches across an 850 acre campus and includes facilities handling all types of cargo, including containers, dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, roll on-roll off, refrigerated and project cargo, two cruise ship terminals handling more than 370,000 passengers per
year, and access to two national railway systems with direct connections to major US cities.

Strategic Challenge
In today’s climate, Port Director Steve Cernak and other directors of ports on coasts throughout the world are working to meet increasingly stringent security objectives.

The Solution
The Port recently implemented a Verint® Networked Video Solution to enhance security of its container facilities, passenger terminals, and perimeter.
“We researched video surveillance solutions and found that Verint offered the solution that provided all of the key elements we need,” Cernak said. “Technologically and economically, Verint offered the best solution given the vastness of the system we require. Because of the port’s size and scope, we found that the only way to connect to the system was to use wireless technology.
